The Historic Site Worth Protecting
Hunter’s Iron Works and Rappahannock Forge is more than a forty-acre historic landmark. It offers an extraordinary opportunity to discover America’s industrial beginnings, the birthplace of the nation’s defense industry, and the many people who shaped it.
Our core mission is to preserve, interpret, and showcase this iconic site and its substantial archaeological footprint for future public access and an unforgettable visitor experience.
Through our restoration efforts, we honor Revolutionary War hero James Hunter and the Quaker craftsmen, free Black individuals, and enslaved persons who built and operated the largest iron and gun manufacturing center in 18th-century North America. Their work was crucial in supplying weapons for America’s Continental Troops. It is time for Hunter’s Iron Works and Rappahannock Forge to receive the recognition they deserve for their pivotal role in securing victory in the Revolutionary War. James Hunter's unwavering sacrifices for liberty and justice are a story worth elevating for the civic lessons it offers.

The Archaeological Treasure Worth Discovering
The Colonial and Revolutionary War-era site is a massive archaeological treasure trove, ready to offer a glimpse of our shared past. An extensive hand-dug canal remains partially intact, along with stone and brick footprints of at least five major structures from an expansive complex, including a 128-foot forge, blast furnaces, coal house, 4 story armory, and specialized mills.
The soil holds evidence of heavy manufacturing, including discarded iron slag, pig iron ingots, and remnants of specialized military hardware like muskets, pistols, and heavy "wall guns." More artifacts lie beneath the surface where every acre tells the story of the complex community of enslaved laborers, free artisans, and managers who operated the forge under patriot James Hunter.
Through strategic partnerships, we aim to reveal the site's definitive footprint, survey and map its archaeological narrative, reconstruct elements for interpretation and interactive experiences, and offer a place where memories come alive.
