Foundation

Forging the Future.

The Freedom Forge Foundation honors the legacy of James Hunter, a Revolutionary War hero who built the largest iron and gun manufacturing center in 18th-century North America. Producing crucial guns and war materials for America's Continental Troops, Hunter’s Iron Works and Rappahannock Forge laid the foundation for America's defense industry, ensuring Patriot victory in the Revolutionary War.

As stewards of this history, we preserve the original Stafford County site and promote civic engagement through interpretation, events, outreach, and education. Inspired by Hunter’s entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to service, we empower future leaders to safeguard liberty and justice for all.

Our Inspiration

The Legacy of James Hunter and the Freedom Forge Foundation

The Freedom Forge Foundation was established during America's 250th Anniversary celebrations to honor an overlooked Revolutionary War hero from Virginia, James Hunter. A pioneering businessman during the colonial era, he established Hunter’s Iron Works and Rappahannock Forge, the largest iron and gun manufacturing complex in 18th-century North America. Hunter’s Iron Works was commissioned by Virginia’s Founding Fathers to produce weaponry, naval fittings, troop kits, camp kettles, iron implements, and other essential materials for the Continental troops, thereby playing a crucial role in securing America’s victory in the Revolutionary War.

Today, James Hunter is commemorated for giving rise to America’s Defense Industry and embodying the ideals of democracy, liberty, and justice through his efforts and sacrifices. He personified the 1776 Philadelphia pledge committing “our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.”

The Freedom Forge Foundation is tasked with preserving the original site of Hunter’s Irons Works, amplifying its historic contribution, and fostering a deeper understanding of its cultural significance.

The Freedom Forge Foundation also continues James Hunter’s efforts to advance liberty and justice by raising awareness of historical developments, fostering civil engagement, and hosting informative events and activities for the public and the next generation of leaders. We aim for a collective approach based on shared responsibility, accountability for actions, and respect for fundamental human rights.
